Professor Francisco Javier García-Sánchez
Prof. F. J. García-Sánchez received the Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., USA. He has been a faculty member of the Department of Electronics and Circuits at Universidad Simón Bolívar (USB) in Caracas, Venezuela, since 1977. His main research interests are in the area of Semiconductor Devices, including PIN, photovoltaic, tunnel, and MOSFET devices, and especially their compact modeling. He has held various directive positions at USB, including member of the Superior and Academic Councils, first Coordinator of R&D in Engineering and Applied Sciences, Coordinator of Undergraduate and Graduate Study Programs in Electronics Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, founder and Head of the Solid Sate Electronics Laboratory. He is formally retired from USB, but remains actively involved as a Professor Emeritus in research and educational expansion activities. Presently he is Honorary Collaborating Professor at King Juan Carlos University, Madrid, Spain, and also cooperates with research groups in Spain, Puerto Rico and South America.
Publications & presentations:
More than 30 keynote, plenary and invited talks, as well as distinguished lectures at conferences, workshops and seminars worldwide. More than 170 technical articles (tens invited) published in peer-refereed journals and conference proceedings. Co-author of a graduate level textbook, and editor of collective work books. To date his technical publications have received more than 3900 citations, and according to Google Scholar, he has an h-index of 30.
Editorial activities:
o Former Editor for Latin America and the Caribbean of EDS Newsletter.
o Former Associate Editor of “Acta Científica Venezolana.”
o General and Technical Program Committee Chair of numerous international specialized technical conferences, symposia and workshops, and referee for specialized journals and international conferences.
o Member of technical journals’ editorial committees.
Some contributions to professional societies:
o Founding member and first Chair of Venezuela’s IEEE ED and CAS Joint Chapter.
o Former member of EDS’s old Administrative Committee (AdCom), today’s Board of Governors, and Vice-chair for Latin America and the Caribbean of EDS Subcommittee for Regions & Chapters (SRC-LA).
o Former member of EDS’ Master’s and Ph.D. Students Fellowship Program Evaluation Committees.
o Former member of IEEE’s Undergraduate Teaching Award & Leon K. Kirchmayer Graduate Teaching Award Committees.
Main posts in academic and scientific chartered bodies:
o National Coordinator from 1989 to 1994 of the Area of Electronics in Venezuela’s National Program for New Technologies, sponsored and funded by the National Science & Technology Council (CONICIT) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB,.
o President from 1998 to 2000 of the Engineering Commission, and member of the General Council of Venezuela’s System for the Promotion of Research.
o Member from 2000 to 2007of the External Credentials Evaluating Commission of the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE), Puebla, México.
Awards, distinctions & honors:
o Various recognitions and awards, e.g.: Outstanding scientist, Excellence in applied sciences research, Outstanding research trajectory, Meritorious teacher, Outstanding contributor to article reviewing, Best paper awards, etc. (several years).
o Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE EDS (from 2003 to 2016).
o Elevated in 2007 to Professor Emeritus by decision of the Directive Council of Simón Bolívar University, Venezuela.
