Okayama City

Okayama City (Japanese: 岡山市/おかやまし Okayama-shi) is a city located in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture, Japan, and serves as the prefectural capital. Okayama is renowned as the setting of the famous Japanese folktale about Momotaro and is also known for producing premium fruits.

Since the Edo period, Okayama has been the castle town of the Ikeda clan of Okayama Domain. The city center features attractions such as Korakuen Garden, one of Japan’s three great gardens, and Okayama Castle. Historically, Okayama has been a hub of education. During the pre-war period from the Meiji to Showa eras, the city was home to the Sixth High School, the only nationally numbered high school in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, as well as Okayama Medical University, the first university in the region. Today, many universities and higher education institutions remain concentrated in the city center.

Okayama also serves as a transportation hub for the Chugoku and Shikoku regions. Since the 1980s, the opening of the Seto Ohashi Bridge has enabled direct rail connections between Chugoku and Shikoku. The completion of the Sanyo Expressway further improved Okayama’s transportation network. The Okayama metropolitan area has since developed into part of the Higashi-Seto Economic Zone alongside nearby metropolitan areas.
